AMsoccer travelled to St Monans last weekend looking to go top of their group in the Tom McIntryre Cup.
Both teams started well, particularly AM who were doing well to move the ball in tough conditions. A couple of neat and tidy phases of play resulted in the away team to get a couple of early shots in on goal that were well dealt with by the defenders and goalkeepers.
The first goal of the game went to St Monans- a ball whipped in to the front zone from a corner was missed by the defender and headed to the far away corner past the outrushing defenders. 1-0. Confidence grew with the home team, who enjoyed a fair share of possession and attacks until AMsoccer caught them on the break and equalised with a diagonal ball behind the right back for the resulting cross to be poked in after a few scrappy clearances. Minutes later, McWatt accurately fires in a clever free kick underneath wall in to the bottom corner from 25 yards out to put AM in front. Looking to go in to the second half 2-1 up, St Monans responded with a goal from another cross in to the box
Half time 2-2.
A poor performance by both teams in the second half due to the worsening weather and heavy pitch meant winning the game was down to determination and the willingness to win. Brief counter attacks were attempted by both teams with no real end product. In the end it looked like AMsoccer were going to score the next goal, but a lack of concentration by the away teams defence saw a through pass going past the defenders only for them all to stop and wave offside to the referee. The St Monans striker kept his cool unopposed and fired low in to the corner.
A tough result to take with a depleted squad, but a mature performance by the young side who done well on the day. Final score 3-2 to St Monans.
